Using Website Surveys

in on

Even though modern business websites can do a lot more than they used to, many of their best (and potentially most profitable) features go largely ignored. That’s certainly the case when it comes to web surveys, which can be a wonderful tool for figuring out what’s really on the minds of your best prospects and customers.

I suspect more business owners don’t employ online surveys simply because they don’t understand them very well, or think they don’t get enough traffic to find the answers they’re looking for. Still, when it comes to figuring out the needs, preferences, and buying motives of the men and women who visit your website, why not go straight to them for the answers?

Here are a few tips for making the most of web surveys if you haven’t tried them before:

Place the survey in a prominent place. Your web survey is never going to be successful if no one sees it. Try to place it above the fold on your home page, or on a key landing page, to ensure that it gets seen and noticed.

Use short questions and ask for short answers. Visitors and customers are likely to give you a few moments of their time if you ask politely and offer an incentive (see below). Keep your questions and answers short, though, or your survey is likely to be ignored.

Offer some sort of reward for participation. Some people will answer your survey simply because you ask. For others, offering a small freebie or discount might be needed to get them to share their thoughts.

The results of web surveys aren’t always conclusive, and a lot of what you’ll get from the process depends both on the traffic you receive and the questions you ask. Still, you’ll never be able to know your customers as well as they know themselves, so why not ask them what you can do to market to them more effectively?
